What is a Muqatta and a Fawatih?

Terms and word definitions as they relate to Islam.

What is a Muqatta and a Fawatih?

Muqatta' at are unique letter combinations that begin certain chapters of the Qur'an. Muqattaat literally means abbreviated or shortened.

They are also known as Fawatih or openers as they form the opening verse of the respective chapters
