What is Ijma?

Terms and word definitions as they relate to Islam.
[initially the terms are being brought over from our old board
"http://bbs.troach.net/viewforum(8).htm"
as there is a lot of good and important information found there.]
We will also be adding new terms from time to time.

As with the old board if we have made a mistake defining or describing any of the terms please let us know.

What is Ijma?

What is Ijma?

"ijma" or consensus among Muslims for determining matters of Islamic law.

ijma, has always been controversial and rarely practiced within Islam.
Some interpret it to mean "consensus of the scholars" - having nothing to do with the opinion of the community at large.
Even when its legitimacy is recognized, ijma is accepted only as a secondary (or tertiary) form of authority, behind the fiqh councils.
Also, it bears pointing out that ijma and consultation are applicable only within the Muslim community (and probably limited to the "consensus" of Muslim males).
