Terms and word definitions as they relate to Islam.

what is an imam?

In general an Imam is the man leads the recitation of prayer when two or more worshipers are present.

However the Imam may have much greater authority in many cases he is the leader of a mosque as well as the community.

Some groups also add a little more to the Imam’s authority to be one who rule both in the political sense and as well as interpreting doctrine with infallible, God-given wisdom.
