NEW JERSEY — Local media reported that US attorney Nadia Kahf was appointed as the first hijab-wearing judge on the New Jersey Superior Court.
According to the local news website North Jersey, Kahf, a Syrian-origin immigration and family law attorney, took the oath of office on Thursday while holding a copy of the Quran.
Local media report that New Jersey’s Governor Phil Murphy nominated her as a Passaic County Superior Court judge a year ago.
Despite not being the first Muslim woman to serve as a state judge, Kahf wears a hijab on the bench.
A member of the Islamic Center of Passaic County, she is also a legal adviser to Wafa House, a nonprofit domestic violence and social service agency in Clifton.
