What does Allahu Akbar mean?

Allahu Akbar is an Islamic exclamation called the Takbir in Arabic which means 'Allah is the Greatest'.
This statement is said by Muslims numerous times for instance:
During the call for prayer,
during prayer,
when they are happy and wish to express their approval of what they see and/or hear,
when they slaughter an animal,
when they want to praise a speaker,
Its meaning: 'Allah is the Greatest.'
Muslims praise Allah in every aspect of life; and as such they say Allahu Akbar.
It is reported to be most said expression in the world.

As you listed there are many peaceful ways muslims use the term. But there are also many violent implications behind the term.
The fact that muslims use the term when they slaughter an animal is a very important fact when one realizes that Islam considers non-Muslims to be Less than Human (animals).

Narrated Abu Juhaifa:
I asked 'Ali "Do you have anything Divine literature besides what is in the Qur'an?" Or, as Uyaina once said, 'Apart from what the people have?' 'Ali said, 'By Him Who made the grain split (germinate) and created the soul, we have nothing except what is in the Quran and the ability (gift) of understanding Allah's Book which He may endow a man, with and what is written in this sheet of paper." He replied, "The legal regulations of Diya (Blood-money) and the (ransom for) releasing of the captives, and the judgment that no Muslim should be killed in Qisas (equality in punishment) for killing a Kafir (disbeliever)."

If it had been Our will, We should have elevated him with Our signs; but he inclined to the earth, and followed his own vain desires.
